A highly important ebony and ivory marquetry centre table by Ferdinando Pogliani (1832-1899), Milan, 2nd half of 19th century.

This highly important centre table of ebony and ivory marquetry by Ferdinando Pogliani has a rectangular top with a central figurative panel of engraved ivory showing a procession of Roman horseman. The template for this scenery was a copper engraving of 1575 by Diana Mantuana, as well known as Diana Ghisi (Mantua 1535-1612), published in 1773 by Carlo Losie. The table is richly adorned with a border of scrolling acanthus leaves and putti with ovals to each corner, ribbons and cartouches. The square tapering moulded legs joined by a flattened stretcher with central turned finial on bun feet are connected by a traverse with a stylized urn vase.
